Ebola Virus Antibodies in Fruit Bats, Bangladesh
نویسندگان
چکیده
To determine geographic range for Ebola virus, we tested 276 bats in Bangladesh. Five (3.5%) bats were positive for antibodies against Ebola Zaire and Reston viruses; no virus was detected by PCR. These bats might be a reservoir for Ebola or Ebola-like viruses, and extend the range of filoviruses to mainland Asia.

A Short Overview of Ebola Outbreak
Ebola virus disease (formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever) is a severe, often fatal illness, with a death rate of up to 90%. The illness affects humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees). Ebola first appeared in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks, one in a village near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the other in a remote area of Sudan. T...

Fruit bats are suspected to be a natural reservoir of filoviruses, including Ebola and Marburg viruses. Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on the viral glycoprotein antigens, we detected filovirus-specific immunoglobulin G antibodies in 71 of 748 serum samples collected from migratory fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) in Zambia during 2006-2013. Although antibodies to African filoviruse...

متن کاملExperimental Inoculation of Egyptian Fruit Bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) with Ebola Virus
Colonized Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus), originating in South Africa, were inoculated subcutaneously with Ebola virus (EBOV). No overt signs of morbidity, mortality, or gross lesions were noted. Bats seroconverted by Day 10-16 post inoculation (p.i.), with the highest mean anti-EBOV IgG level on Day 28 p.i. EBOV RNA was detected in blood from one bat. In 16 other tissues tested, v...

apparently on the basis of an unsubstantiated report (1). Li et al.’s data confirm that horseshoe bats are a reservoir for a coronavirus related to SARS-CoV found in humans and the virus isolated from palm civets, but this does not make them the reservoir for SARS-CoV. Dobson’s linking of bats to emerging diseases caused by Ebola and Marburg viruses is speculative and does not agree with publis...
